The louder nights of the Unspoken Tour. Nine songs including Getting Younger Every Day with the Okoro Sisters — a collaboration that changed the room every time.
The Unspoken Tour started as six nights. It became forty-three. By the time the band was three weeks in, something was happening that had not been rehearsed. The songs were changing — not the notes, but the weight of them. Songs played a hundred times in the studio started arriving differently in front of people.
Roosevelt recorded everything on a single microphone he had set up at the side of the stage on the second night. He told the band after the last show. They did not know whether to be angry or grateful. They ended up grateful.
The recordings divided themselves naturally into two volumes. Vol. I is the louder nights — the ones where the room was loud and the music followed. The Okoro Sisters joined for two of those nights. Getting Younger Every Day, with Adunni, Folake and Bisola on backing vocals, became something none of them had planned.
Track Listing
The opener. Something about the quality of early morning that sets the night up rather than ending it.
With the Okoro Sisters. The room changed when they walked on stage. That is the only way to say it.
Live, the wrong note landed harder. The audience always knew exactly what Big D meant.
The same dry warmth every night. The audience laughed and meant it.
The studio version held something back. The live version did not.
The song that names the band. Instrumental — played once per night, every night. Always slightly different.
With Nikos on bouzouki.
About repetition that is not repetition. The same chord played with a different feeling becomes a different chord.
The extended closer. Running to 5:42 on the nights when the room was willing to hold on a little longer.
